Sounds in the ball park. I gave about that price just for my 2710 and loader new in 1999.

Its a great tractor. I have 445 hours on mine now.

I'm no expert, but while the .357 is a great self defense weapon in the home, I would load it with .38 hollow points. You don't want to shoot a hole through the next house and the one after that. Same think on shooting a slug in a shotgun. I'd load birdshot in that. A rifle is better than nothing, but not the best weapon in close quarters.

I have a .357 and a 12 gauge shotgun, but I would go for the .357 first, unless I had a sawed off shotgun, then I might tend to use it first. Nothing like the sound of the pump shotgun to get the bad guy's attention.

I haven't been here in a while since I spend most of my time on other tractor sites. This is a good site, or was, but having to pop up posts is too much trouble, and too slow on my laptop. I ain't gonna do it, and I dang sure ain't paying money to see it like it was. Too many other places on the web to read about tractors and other subjects.

When this is fixed, I'll be back.

For loader work HST is the way to go. It was never so evident as yesterday when I was moving 5" to 10" granite rocks from the pile where the dump truck left it to the creek where I was building as swale crossing, and to a draw where I was covering up some debris.

The rocks are so big that its hard to just slip the bucket right in there and get a full load, so it required some back and forth movement, all the while raising the bucket. This back and forth movement was very fast, done with one foot while the right hand was on the joystick and the left on the steering wheel. Having to shift while working this particular pile would have been quite a pain. I was able to get a good bucketfull every time because of the absolute control over the tractor.

They say you lose some power through the HST, but I just don't see it. I lose traction or RPMS on bites that are too big for the tractor. Gears would not have any effect on that.

HST tractors have better resale I'm told, although I don't have first hand knowledge of that.

If you are doing a lot of plowing and need constant measurable speed one of the other transmissions might be more desireable. Having said that, I pull a disk with my HST and its works fine.

I have a Rhino 5' cutter and it does a great job. The only time there is any poorly cut grass it is right where you indicate. Seems like it is only particular species of grass - volunteer oats seems to be the biggest culprit. The only solution I have found is to slow down or overlap the way you are doing. Fortunately its seems I don't have this problem on most species of grass in my field, so I don't have to slow down or overlap that much. This is where the Hydro comes in real handy.

I don't know how the HST works at all. What I do know is before I bought my HST tractor 3 years ago My dealer says he has not had a single HST failure. Ever. Of all the people on these tractor boards, at least those with Kubotas, I have not read one single ocurrence of HST failure. Seems like maybe one JD or one NH had something that was covered by warranty, but as far as any expensive repairs on tractors out of warranty - NONE. My dealer says they just don't break period. He said replacing clutches on gear tractors is inevitable, especially when it is being used for loader work; whereas, the HST should last as long as the tractor with no repairs, assuming proper maintenance is done.<br>

So I don't know where this "conventional wisdom" that they require more and/or more expensive repairs comes from. Could it be that you have more hydraulic fluid to change, and thus more maintenance expense there?

Nellie, I have a B2710 and a 6.5 foot disk harrow. I pull it as fast as I can go in medium range in heavy clay soil, with 200# of extra weight on in help it dig in better.

Other than a louder whine from the HST than I normally experience mowing or doing other chores, it seems to work fine. I have been using it about 1800 to 2000 RPMs and the only time it slows down is going up a pretty steep incline with the disk in the ground.

The 3-point picks up the disk just fine. The only trouble I have is that I have to back it out of my shop (about a 10" drop off the concrete) because when I tried going forward the disk hit the concrete before I could get out of there.

I'm doing much the same thing as you are. When I planted rye grass last fall I just disked and then broadcast the seed. However the Sudan I plan on planting for the summer needs to be covered an inch or so by dirt, so I plan to drag a chain link fence over it after broadcasting the seed. I'm also going a little heavy on the seed to compensate for not drilling it.

If the 5 footer had been available thats what I would have gotten, but you have a couple more horses and it shouldn't be any trouble at all. Pulling the disk is actually kind of fun, but its taking a couple of passes to really get last falls' rye crop turned completely. Now its raining, so I'm running behind.......
